History of Hurghada is not long. Initially, it was a small fishing village, and then it was turned into the area of oil industry workers in 1920. In 1970, during the Israeli war, Hurghada was a strategic object, and on its territory were placed military bases of the Egyptian army, but there were no military actions. After the end of the war in 1975, the Egyptian government decided to open the tourist area in Hurghada. And in 1976, was built the first hotel Sheraton (now it is called Le Meridien). But the real boom in hotel construction was possible only in 1980; Egypt has focused on the development of mass tourism and allowed foreign airlines to charter the flights.
